If you’ve asked me for a restaurant recommendation in San Francisco, chances are I’ve recommended Frascati. This post is long overdue, as it is for one of my absolute favorite restaurants in San Francisco. Frascati is the perfect place to go for dinner with parents, date nights, or even just a girls night out (if you want to splurge!). In this cozy neighborhood bistro, on the corner of Hyde and Green, Chef Mike Pawlik is serving cuisine inspired by the Mediterranean coast with a Californian twist. The menu transforms in order to provide the freshest ingredients any season has to offer, however, many staple items remain year round. I have tried the majority of the dishes offered, but have become a creature of habit and stick with my favorites. First off, unless you can get one of the window tables I recommend sitting in the upstairs loft area if available. From upstairs you get a great view into the downstairs open kitchen, and the noise level is more conducive to an intimate meal.
The top two appetizers in my opinion are the burrata and the truffle gnocchi. Slices of baguette topped with prosciutto, burrata, fig jam, and balsamic vinegar – aka heaven. Each order comes with two servings, so make sure to order accordingly. The gnocchi is ricotta based and is served with varying vegetables depending on the season. A lot of restaurants go overboard when it comes to truffle, however, the truffle flavoring does not overpower the gnocchi and rather complements it nicely.
I very rarely order chicken when I go out to eat, nor is it one of my favorite proteins. That being said, the Pan Roasted Half Chicken from Frascati is one of my favorite meals. The chicken is flavorful and juicy, while the skin is perfectly crisped and seasoned. If I haven’t convinced you on the chicken, try one of the house made pastas or perhaps the pork chop.
This is not a restaurant where you can pass on dessert, trust me. If you only order one dessert make it the Chocolate Bread Pudding. Served slightly warmed with a large scoop of hazelnut ice cream, you will not be disappointed. Another constant on the dessert menu is fruit cobbler served warm with vanilla ice cream. The type of fruit depends on the season; I’ve had their Apple Cobbler as well as their Peach & Blueberry Cobbler.
