On pretty much any given Saturday morning, as long as I am in the city, you will find me eating my way through the Farmers’ Market. I first make rounds at all my usual spots to gather the week’s food, and then treat myself to breakfast. Despite the many fantastic options, I can’t help always going to Pepples Donuts located inside of the Ferry Building next to Pressed Juicery. Michael, who is there on Saturday mornings, is very passionate about these sweet treats and will help you choose the perfect donut for your cravings. These donuts have become my Saturday morning guilty pleasure – although I try to convince myself that because they are vegan they must be healthy!
Consider, however, that Pepples bakes all of their donuts – – they are 100% cake, not fried! Their big selling point is that the donuts are organic and vegan, which is hard to pull-off with a cake based donut.
There are so many flavors to choose from, including classic, seasonal, and specialty donuts. During my first visit I was conservative and went with “Vanilla Sprinkle” & “Chocolate Frosted.” On my next trip I decided to get a little wild and ordered “Salted Caramel” & “Blueberry.” All four of these donuts were excellent, but to my surprise the “Blueberry” was by far the best.
Pepples uses only high quality organic blueberries in the strikingly purple frosting, and mixes them in with the cake batter for an unusual blueberry experience. While I am not a blueberry aficionado, these donuts are to die for. They are just the right amount of sweet, without being too sweet, and the cake is moist despite lacking eggs or milk. Todd was a big fan of the Salted Caramel, but as to be expected with the flavor, it was a little too sweet for me (although that didn’t stop me from helping finish off every last crumb!)
The two classic donuts I first had were also delicious and shouldn’t be overlooked. You would never know these were “vegan” baked goods if not told in advance. Both are a vanilla cake donut with their respective frostings (Vanilla Glaze + Sprinkles and Chocolate Frosted). They are both simple, satisfying, and a great choice if you aren’t feeling adventurous. The Lemon Poppy Seed is another good one if you are craving some citrus, next time, I think I’ll try the Pumpkin Pie!
