enter site This post is long overdue − I can’t believe it is already February! Tracking back a month ago we decided to ring in 2015 with a weekend trip down to Monterey & Carmel, and of course I had to find the best food spots along the way. Driving from San Francisco we wanted to experience the scenic drive along CA-1, but didn’t want to spend hours in the car so we cut across in Santa Cruz and took Route 1 down the coast from there. We decided to stretch our legs and grab a bite to eat in this laid back beach town at a cozy café called The Picnic Basket.

Barefoot locals gather to catch up and enjoy a farm-to-table meal, treat, or delectable ice cream cone. The seasonal menu is built on ingredients sourced from local farms and is comprised of simple yet delicious food for all to enjoy. After much debate i ordered the famed Chicken Salad Sandwich and Todd chose a seasonal green salad − neither disappointed! While waiting for our food I took the opportunity to sample a few flavors of homemade ice cream, all from the Penny Ice Creamery. The two standouts for me were “Spiced pumpkin seed brittle” and “Mint chip.” If you aren’t in the mood for ice cream they have a selection of baked goods including homemade sugar donuts.

In hindsight it would have been a better choice to eat at The Picnic Basket rather than in the car, as it was quite a messy sandwich with a generous portion of chicken salad that overflows with each bite you take. All the flavors work perfectly together − the creamy well seasoned chicken salad, avocado, Happy Boy Farms greens, and the house made pickled onions all tucked inside two slices of whole grain sourdough bread. The mess I made was totally worth it…I was thoroughly satisfied by this sandwich. Now for the salad, this is not your traditional boring salad. It is fresh crisp mixed greens, pomegranate seeds, persimmons, and sliced almonds for an added crunch all swirled together with a light natural dressing. Not only does this place serve fantastic food, it is also very reasonably priced!
